Who are we working with Community-based Integrated Development What do we do We focus on: Environmental Sustainability and Horticultural Education Our projects are related to agriculture skills for young people. In 2012 we ran an one-year pilot with Enfants du Mekong by introducing a vegetable garden and 5 ha rice paddy. In September 2014, after routinely monitoring the pilot, we scaled it up to the Agriculture Skills in Public Schools (ASPUS) Project. From 2018 onwards we are now constructing our own Agri-tech Training Centre to focus on certified horticultural education and training for rural development. Why do we do it The agriculture sector is inefficient- contributing to one third of the GDP and employing half the labour force. Areas close to the border have a constant out-flux of people, especially youths, to work in low-skilled high-risk jobs. Teaching them skills related to growing better and setting up agri-businesses are way to demonstrate a rural economy can be thriving. What have we achieved so far Two harvests at the rice paddy (each year involving more locals in activities to share knowledge by practice) Implementing a unique Training of Trainers methodology to train 47 schools teachers and set up vegetable gardens of 30 x 20 in 42 public schools Restoring and digging new ponds in 22 schools for a holistic, all-encompassing approach to project success. Construction of a brand new training Centre Whats Next Maintain focus on vocational training and actively transition into entrepreneurship, agri businesses and rural livelihoods.
